El Cid: ¿un héroe para el siglo XXI? El mundo de frontera del siglo XI y la violencia en la novela Sidi de Arturo Pérez-Reverte

    En su best seller y novela de aventuras Sidi. Un relato de frontera (2019), el novelista español Arturo Pérez-Reverte recrea parte del primer exilio de Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar con el fin de des-pertar un mayor interés por la historia medieval peninsular y recuperar un Cid descontamina-do de la manipulación ideológica sufrida durante el franquismo. En este estudio se analizan la imagen heroica del Cid en la ficción elaborada por Pérez-Reverte —imagen acorde con la expuesta por los historiadores cidianos— y la representación de la violencia y la brutalidad del mundo de frontera entre cristianos y musulmanes en Sidi. Aunque la biografía de un gue-rrero legendario como el Cid puede prestarse a la idealización de la guerra, Pérez-Reverte no elude matizar una imagen crítica del contexto de lucha endémica en el siglo xi. Sin embargo, esta crítica se vehicula a través de otro personaje diferente, Diego Ordóñez, y no de Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, quien posee sólidas cualidades como líder y encarna un tipo de héroe bicultural más adecuado para la época actual

    In his best-seller and adventure novel Sidi. An Account of the Frontier (2019), Arturo Pérez-Re-verte recreates part of Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar ̓s first exile already portrayed in the first part of the Cantar de Mio Cid. This recreation aims to awake more interest in Spanish medieval history and to redress the Cid ̓s image after its manipulation during Franco ̓s times. The aim of this study is to analyze the heroic image of Cid in Pérez-Reverte ̓s fiction—an image in line with that presented by historians—and the representation of violence and brutality among Chris-tians and Muslims in the eleventh-century frontier world. Though war idealization may not be easily avoided in the biography of a legendary hero, Pérez-Reverte still provides a nuanced,critical representation of violence. However, his focus is laid on a different character, Diego Ordoñez rather than Rodrigo Díaz, who emerges as a bi-cultural heroe with powerful leader-ship skills—that is, a model of hero arguably more suitable for modern times
