Palmer's Century Sermon was prompted by requests from the citizens of New Orleans that he deliver an address dedicated to the Twentieth Century. In addition to the content of the sermon, this article examines Palmer's proofs, organization, style, delivery, and audience reaction. The Century Sermon was a fitting conclusion to the long career of one of the South's great pulpiteers.
