  • When a preacher attracts huge congregations during the disarray produced by war and the tensions brought on by an unsteady peace, his philosophy and practice of rhetoric merit analysis by members of the speech profession. This article focuses on the rhetoric of Helmut Thielicke, a German preacher who defied Hitler's tirades against religion and exerted wide influence during World War II and who now speaks to thousands of postwar churchmen.
