Based on a rigid-flexible multibody dynamics formulation, a moving frame approach is used to describe the kinematics of the deformable bodies where the large rigid motion is described using Cartesian coordinates and the flexibility is introduced using the finite element method. A general methodology for chassis and structural components design is presented. This methodology links the simulation code with optimization algorithms and sensitivities obtained by the direct differentiation method and finite difference techniques are used. An example of a 3D vehicle is presented where the chassis is designed to satisfy the dynamic stress constraints with the objective to reduce the mass of the vehicle.
