    La autonomía universitaria es una de esas instituciones que, no obstante ser por definición esenciales, despiertan, sin embargo, agudas controversias. Desde su aparición, con el nacimiento mismo, en la Edad Media, la universidad como centro fundamental de la educación y la cultura, ha sido un tema permanente de debate. Quizás eso se deba a que, sin ser propiamente un ente político, la universidad, y con ella la idea de su autonomía, siempre han estado vinculadas a la política. Y es sintomático el hecho de que grupos e individualidades ajenos, u opuestos a los gobiernos de turno, vehementes defensores de la autonomía universitaria, una vez que acceden al poder se tornan sus enemigos abiertos o velados, muchas veces con encono igual o superior a la vehemencia con que antes la defendieron.

    The university autonomy is one of those institutions that notwithstanding being essential by definition, it has given raise to acute controversies. From its origin, with its birth, in the Middle Ages, the university as a fundamental center of education and culture, has been a theme of permanent debate. Possibly, due to this reason, the university without being a political entity, and together with it the idea of autonomy, the same has always been linked to politics, and it is symptomatic the fact that groups or strange individuals, or people who are opposed to governments, being vehement defenders of the university autonomy, once they have got power, they become its opened or hidden enemies, sometimes with the same or higher animosity which they used to defend it.
