  • Resumen
    • For some time writers have discussed the existence of two schools of thought within the elocutionary movement: the “natural school” of Thomas Sheridan and the “mechanical school” of John Walker. Since the use of the pause played an important role in both Sheridan's and Walker's theories of speaking, a comparison of their positions with regard to the pause sheds light upon the alleged mechanical‐natural dichotomy.
