This article is in the nature of a “last word” on the subject from a man who has exemplified in his writings a vigorous, intelligent, classical approach to oral interpretation. In it are discussed the factual, emotional, contextual, and attitudinal considerations that are a part of “getting the meaning.” The article suggests that many contemporary treatments of the subject are not thorough enough in analyzing these factors.
