    Durante los seis años que ejercí la noble función moral y universitaria de Defensor de los Derechos Universitarios en la Universidad Autónoma de Aguascalientes, México, 2011- 2016, me dediqué a buscar lecturas acordes a los orígenes, fundamentos, funciones y antecedentes de la Defensoría, que luego vinculé con la experiencia del Ombudsman sueco, 1809, y de ahí pasé a hurgar un poco más hacia atrás en el tiempo, y hacia adelante, para acompasar nuestra historia contemporánea. Fue así como encontré lecturas, documentos y debates con colegas contemporáneos, y ese primer acercamiento me condujo a buscar vínculos históricos entre Defensoría y Ombudsman, y pensé que Fray Bartolomé de las Casas puede ser considerado Ombudsman Iberoamericano, pionero de esas novedosas labores en pleno siglo XVI1 , precursor del Ombudsman sueco.

    En este ensayo haremos un breve repaso del nacimiento del Ombudsman sueco, de los cambios que ha tenido en países europeos hasta llegar a las defensorías iberoamericanas.

    Pasaremos revista a las defensorías universitarias y a sus organismos iberoamericanos.

    Después nos trasladaremos a las Indias de América para encontrar el nacimiento de la Defensoría de los derechos naturales-humanos de los indios de América, con ello constatar que Fray Bartolomé es primer Defensor de Indias o primer Ombudsman español y primer Defensor Iberoamericano.     Bartolomé de las Casas, Defensor of Natural Rights. During the six years where I performed the moral, academical and noble job duty as University Defensor of Rights at the Universidad Autonoma de Aguascalientes, in Mexico from 2011 to 2016, I dedicated myself in the search of texts about the origins, fundaments, functions and everything related to the Defensor, then I linked everything with the experience of the Swedish Ombudsman, 1809, from there I looked for more back in time, and forward to adjust it with our contemporary history. That was how I found readings, documents, and some debates with contemporary colleagues, that first approach drove me to look for more historical linkages between the Defensor and the Ombudsman, so I thought that Fray Bartolomé de las Casas could be considered the Iberoamerican Ombudsman, pioneer of such novel works in the XVI century, forerunner from the Swedish Ombudsman2.

    In this essay we will do a short review of the birth of the Swedish Ombudsman, from the changes that have had in the European countries until getting to the Iberoamerican Defensor. Let’s review the University Defensor and its Iberoamerican organisms.

    After that, we would move on to the Indies of America to fi nd the birth of the Defensor from the natural-human rights from the Indies of America, with that we will confi rm that Fray Bartolomé is the fi rst Indies Defensor or fi rst Spanish Ombudsman and the fi rst Iberoamerican Defensor.
