    The article aims to reconstruct the period Amatus Lusitanus spent in Rome between 1 5 5 o and 1 5 5 1 by examining and contextualizing references to that city contained his Centuriae in the light of recent studies that have revived knowledge about Roman medico-scientific milieus in the early modern age. The scientific and cultural vibrancy in mid-sixteenth century Rome is an invitation to reconsider this stage in the Portuguese physician's professional and intellectual career which has hitherto been neglected by his biographers. The article looks at the circumstances of his arrival in Rome, his movements in the Eternal city, the milieus he frequented, the networks of contacts and protection he used and, finally, at his relationships with mid-sixteenth medical circles, with particular attention to two specific groups, «neo-Hippocratic» physicians and surgeons. Using this approach, the paper aims to focus on several particular aspects of Lusitanus' professional and intellectual activity and add a further contribution to knowledge about the scientific landscape of the City of the Popes in the mid sixteenth century.

    L’articolo propone una ricostruzione dei soggiorni che Amato Lusitano trascorse a Roma, tra il 1550 e il 15511 a partire da un'analisi e da una contestualizzazione dei riferimenti alla cita contenuti nelle Centuriae, effettuata allá luce degli studi recenti che hanno rinovato la conoscenza degli ambienti medico- scientifici romani della prima età moderna. La vivacita scientifica e culturale della Roma di metà Cinquecento invita infatti a riconsiderare questa tappa del percorso professionale e intellettuale del medico finora trascurata dai suoi biografi. L'articolo si interroga sulle circostanze dell'arrivo del medico portoghese nella Citta Eterna, quindi si sofferma sui suoi percorsi romani, sugli ambienti frequentati e sulle reti di contatti e protezioni delle quali si avvalse, per infine esaminare i suoi rapporti con gli ambienti medici, con un'attenzione particolare a due gruppi specifici, i medici «neo-ippocratici» e i chirurghi. Attraverso questo percorso, il contributo intende mettere a fuoco alcune particolari sfaccettature dell'attività professionale e intellettuale del medico lusitano e arricchire di un ulteriore tassello la conoscenza del paesaggio scientifico della citta dei Papi degli anni centrali del Cinquecento.
