  Forgotten Practices of the Peasantry: Topping and Trimming Trees in Great Britain (1600-1900). - In Great Britain, trees were frequently topped and pruned till the 17th century. Trimming and pruning were less often done in the mid-18th century, and nearly vanished during the 20th. Trimming is still done in rural areas in the Mediterranean basin, Scandinavia and the intertropical zone. The ideas of writers specialized in agriculture, forestry and the landscape are analyzed through their publications between 1600 and 1900. Few of them showed interest in pruning trees, pollarding, a practice that, over time, received less attention, which was relayed by lively criticism as the disciplines of forestry and agriculture gradually became distinct during the 17th century.

  En Grande-Bretagne l'étêtage et l'émondage des arbres étaient des pratiques courantes jusqu'au XVIIe siècle. Au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, l'émondage devient plus rare et tend quasiment à disparaître au cours du XXe. Il persiste dans les régions rurales méditerranéennes, en Scandinavie et dans la zone intertropicale. Cet article retrace le cheminement des idées d'auteurs spécialistes de l'agriculture, de la forêt et du paysage, dont les écrits, publiés entre 1600 et 1900, ont été analysés. Peu d'entre eux s'intéressent à l'émondage et cette pratique suscite au fil du temps une attention moindre relayée par une vive critique au fur et à mesure que, à partir du XVIIe siècle, les disciplines forestière et agricole s'individualisent.
