In this article a combination of a simple constitutive damage model with the Critical Displacement Method for the prediction of critical points of the equilibrium load{deflection path of a mechanical structure is presented. Departing from a computed equilibrium point a secant sti ness matrix is assembled basing on these displacements. The secant matrix is then used to approximate the eigenvalue equation of the tangent sti ness matrix in the critical point, which results in an eigenvalue problem. Solving this the critical displacements and the critical load can be computed. With this method a prediction is possible at every point of the equilibrium path with or without damage.
