Resumen de Sustentabilidad de la apicultura en San Pedro de Vilcabamba, sur del Ecuador

  La apicultura es una actividad sustentable para las poblaciones rurales. En el sur del Ecuador se encuentra el Parque Nacional Podocarpus (PNP), área protegida que posee una riqueza biodiversa de flora que puede ser aprovechada para desarrollar actividades apícolas. Las abejas habitan en todos los ecosistemas, sin embargo, en la actualidad estos insectos enfrentan problemas muy graves por la degradación de los ecosistemas. El objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar la sustentabilidad en la dimensión social (ISC), económica (IK) y ambiental (IE) de la apicultura en la Asociación de Apicultores de San Pedro de Vilcabamba, para contribuir al manejo y conservación de los ecosistemas de la Región Sur del Ecuador. Con base en la propuesta metodológica de Sarandón se realizó la valoración interdisciplinaria y la evaluación de la sustentabilidad de la apicultura, mediante la construcción de nueve indicadores y 43 subindicadores en las tres dimensiones ISC, IK y IE. Se consideraron los siguientes valores para los indicadores: 0 = malo, 1 = bueno y 2 = muy bueno. La valoración cuantitativa de la sustentabilidad apícola fue de 1,61 y los valores obtenidos en la dimensión ISC fueron de 1,65, en la IE de 1,56 y en la IK de 1,61. Los resultados de esta investigación muestran que la apicultura es una actividad socialmente justa, económicamente rentable y ambientalmente sostenible. Por lo tanto, se concluye que la apicultura puede proyectarse a ser una actividad productiva en las familias rurales del país.

  Beekeeping is a sustainable activity for rural populations. In southern Ecuador, Podocarpus National Park (PNP) is a protected area with a rich biodiversity of flora that can be seized for beekeeping activities. Bees inhabit all ecosystems; however, these insects are currently facing serious problems due to the degradation of ecosystems. The objective of this research was to evaluate the sustainability in the social (CSI), economic (KI) and environmental (EI) dimensions of beekeeping by the Association of Beekeepers of San Pedro de Vilcabamba, to contribute with the management and conservation of the ecosystems of the Southern Region of Ecuador. Based on Sarandón’s methodological proposal, an interdisciplinary assessment and evaluation of the sustainability of beekeeping was carried out through the construction of nine indicators and 43 sub-indicators in the three dimensions CSI, KI, and EI. The following values were considered for the indicators: 0 = bad, 1 = good and 2 = very good. The quantitative valuation of beekeeping sustainability was 1.61 and the values obtained in the CSI dimension were 1.65, in the EI 1.56 and in the KI 1.61. The results of this research show that beekeeping is a socially just, economically profitable, and environmentally sustainable activity. Therefore, beekeeping can be projected to be a productive activity in rural families in the country.
