El asombroso crecimiento en tamaño y capacidades de la Armada del Ejército Popular de Liberación para apoyar la actividad comercial del gigante asiático en todo el planeta ha convertido a Pekín en una de las grandes potencias marítimas de la actualidad. En paralelo a ese crecimiento, las ambiciones territoriales y la asertividad de China se han incrementado paulatinamente, lo que ha traído consigo un aumento notable de las tensiones con el resto de sus vecinos en la región del Indopacífico. Los numerosos encuentros que han tenido lugar durante los últimos años entre la Guardia Costera y otros barcos civiles chinos y sus homónimos filipinos, como el ocurrido en agosto de 2023, han puesto de manifiesto las tácticas híbridas que Pekín parece estar dispuesto a seguir empleando en el mar hasta lograr sus objetivos.

The staggering growth in size and capabilities of the People´s Liberation Navy (PLAN) to support their national commercial activity across the globe has made Beijing one of the century´s maritime powers. Together with such growth, China has also been gradually widening its territorial ambitions and increasing its assertiveness, leading to a rise in tensions with its neighbors in the region. The numerous encounters between the Chinese Coast Guard and Philippine vessels taking place over the last years, including the ones witnessed in August 2023, have highlighted the problematic rhetoric affecting the region, showcasing Chinese hybrid tactics at sea and the willingness to keep using them to get its way. As a result, the Philippines are now looking to strengthen maritime cooperation with regional allies.
