La filosofía desde la otra cara de la modernidad

    Ante la perspectiva que ve a la filosofía como un producto de la modernidad, Luis Villoro propone un experimento mental para ver la filosofía desde su revés. “Desde una perspectiva, los temas y problemas de la modernidad podrían verse como un caso entre muchos. Sería la filosofía con sus temas y problemas permanentes, con sus preguntas e incertidumbres, pero considerados desde nuestra situación. Y nuestra situación es la de un observador situado en el tiempo contemporáneo, pero también en el ámbito de una cultura que no puede ser plenamente occidental, porque es el producto de la dominación cultural de Occidente, ni plenamente moderna, por responder a tradiciones distintas”. Una mentalidad no-occidental es necesaria para esta posible nueva filosofía, de tal manera que Villoro resalta las ideas que todavía hoy en día sostienen los pueblos originarios de América por un lado, y por otro lafilosofía latinoamericana independiente. La revisión de estas dos manifestaciones de pensamiento desde la otra cara de la modernidad, llevará a Villoro a plantear “algunas ideas regulativas generales que, sin comprometer a sus autores, podrían señalar un posible camino por venir en la filosofía mexicana [...] Estas ideas regulativas señalan el camino que pueda dar lugar a una filosofía nueva, distinta a la prevaleciente en el Occidente moderno”. Dicha filosofía, por su caracter reaccionario ante la dominación de la perspectiva modernaoccidental, constituiría una filosofía desde la otra cara de la modernidad: “una filosofía de lo otro”.

    Facing the idea of philosophy as a product of modernity, Luis Villoro propounds a mental experiment to regard philosophy the other way round. ‘From a certain point of view, topics and problems of modernity could be seen as one case among many. It would be philosophy with its permanent topics and problems, questions and uncertainties, but considered from our situation. And our situation is that of an observer placed in contemporary time, but also inside a cultural environment that cannot be completely western because it is the product of the cultural domination of the West, nor completely modern because of its different traditions’. A non-western mentality is needed thus for this possible new philosophy, and Villoro highlights the ideas maintained even today by native American people on the one hand, and the independent Latin American philosophy on the other. The consideration of these two thought manifestations from the other face of modernity, will lead Villoro to suggest ‘some general regulating ideas that, without compromising its authors, could point out to a possible way to come in the Mexican philosophy [...] These regulating ideas show the path to a new philosophy, different from the prevailing one in the modern West.’ Such philosophy, because of its revolutionary character regarding the domination of the modern western view, would constitute a philosophy from the other face of modernity: ‘a philosophy of the other’.
