    El discurso admonitorio que Manuel II dirigió a su hijo y sucesor Juan VIII, inserto en la tradición de los llamados -Espejos de Príncipe‖, constituye la última manifestación de este género retórico-político en el marco de la historia del Imperio Bizantino. El presente artículo se propone, junto con presentar una semblanza del emperador Manuel y abordar el contexto histórico que vio nacer su discurso admonitorio, examinar a través del contenido de la fuente la vocación de trascendencia que animó siempre a Bizancio y que no se vio amilanada por las adversas condiciones políticas que aquejaban al Imperio de entonces y que hacían peligrar su existencia. El artículo presenta además un resumen del discurso en cuestión, ajustado a la numeración original.

    Manuel II‘s admonitory speech to his son and successor John VIII, embedded in the tradition of the so-called -Mirror-of-Princes‖, amounts to the final manifestation of this political-rhetorical genre in the history of the Byzantine empire. By means of this historical source‘s content, the present article sets out to examine the calling towards transcendence that perpetually animated Byzantium - a calling that did not wilt under the adverse political conditions then plaguing the empire and endangering its very existence. Likewise, it presents an outline of Emperor Manuel and broaches the historical context that witnessed the creation of his admonitory speech. The article includes a point-by-point summary of the address, maintaining its original numeration.
