Según Heródoto, los verdaderos enemigos por naturaleza son los mismos pueblos griegos que arrastran fuertes disputas históricas ancestrales. Para Tucídides, la enemistad natural está representada en la hostilidad étnica de las colonias sicilianas hacia su metrópolis Atenas. La noción de enemistad natural tiene múltiples significados y usos, pero muy distinta a la que prosperó durante la era helenística.

According to Herodotus, true enemies by nature are the same Greek people who carry strong historic ancestral disputes. For Thucydides, the natural enmity is represented in the ethnic hostility of the Sicilian colonies towards its metropolis Athens. The notion of natural enmity has multiple meanings and uses, but very different from that which flourished during the Hellenistic era.
