The susceptibility of seventy two isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae and forty seven of Haemophilus influenzae to several antibiotics were determined, from april 1997 to july 1998, in the Bacteriology Seetion of Corporación para Investigaciones Biológicas de Medellín, Colombia. Among S. pneumoniae isolares, 100% were susceptible to vancomicin, trovafloxacin and levofloxacin, 95.8% to ceftriaxone, 94.4% to azithromycin, 94.4% clatrithromycin, 91.1% to amoxicillin-clavulanate, 91.1% cefaclor, 88.9% to cefuroxime, and 59.3% to penicillin. Among H influenzae isolates, 100% were susceptible to imipenem, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, trovafloxacin, levofloxacin, cefuroxime, amoxicillin-clavulanate, 97.9% were susceptible to azithromycin, 95% to cephipime, 93.8% to ampiciline sulbactam, 92.9% to cefaclor, 90% to grepafloxacin and 87.2% to clarithromycin. 14.6% of H. influenzae strains were beta-lactamase positive. An increase in the resistance of S. pneumoniae isolates to penicilline is a fact. The new quinolones and macrolides appear as good. therapeutical alternatives. According to this information H influenzae remains very susceptible to all antibiotics tested.
