Estados Unidos, sin duda, ha tenido y tiene la mayor influencia (económica, política, etc) en prácticamente todos los rincones del globo. Por su ubicación geopolítica América Latina vive esta realidad de una forma notorira, lo que otorga un valor excepcional a su estudio desde todas las diversas disciplinas y perspectivas, además, esta idea se refuerza considerando los actuales hechos en los que se percibe la actitud de EE.UU. con países del tercer mundo y la polémica suscitada por los nuevos y numerosos antecedentes de la intervención norteamericana durante el período de 1970-1973 en Chile. En este caso esta influencia es analizada desde la mirada del ex presidente chileno Salvador Allende a través de sus intervenciones en el Senado de Chile y de otros discursos de su autoría emitidos durante su larga y prolífica vida política. Constituye un aporte de excepcional valor por la importancia de su figura en la historia del país y por lo representativo de sus palabras para una época interesante y conflictiva, donde plantea algunas de las causas y consecuencias de la interacción de algunos países de América Latina voluntaria, o la más de las veces, obligada con la potencia del norte y los intereses de ésta en la zona.

There is little doubt that the United States have long had –and do still have– a large eco-nomic and political influence upon virtually any corner of the world. Such an influence isespecially visible in the Latin American case due to this region’s geopolitical position. Therefore, the US influence on Latin America constitutes an interesting subject of study that is worth analysing from the perspective of different disciplines and approaches. Moreover, the interest of the Latin American case to understand the extent of the US influence beyond its borders can be appreciated if we take into account the latter’s pre-sent attitude to Third World countries, as well as the controversy generated by therecently-released news about the US intervention in Chile between 1970 and 1973.This article deals with the US influence on Chile (1970-73) as seen by Salvador Allende –i.e.the former President of Chile– in the speeches he made during his long and prolific life,some of which where delivered at the Chilean Senado. The interest of the President’s testimony stems from Allende’s centrality to Chilean history and how representative hiswords are of the time of conflict Allende’s Chile went through. These speeches state someof the causes and consequences of the interaction among the Latin American states andthe Northern power –i.e. the US administration and US interests in the area–, which inmost cases Latin American cannot escape.
