Il contributoaffronta il tema del lavoro dignitoso, analizzandolo attraverso la lente dell’orario di lavoro. Argomento universale e finanche fondativo per il Diritto del lavoro, il tempo di lavoro si dimostra capace di rispondere sia alle esigenze più tradizionali di tutela della salute dei lavoratori che a quelle più moderne, oggi riconducibili all’articolato e complesso principio di decentwork(conciliazione tra lavoro e vita privata, eguaglianza di genere, inclusione lavorativa delle persone disabili, e così via). In questo contesto, il contributo cerca di indirizzare lo sguardo del lettore anche oltre le circostanze attuali, per domandarsi se, nel combinarsi delle diverse prospettive coinvolte, non vi sia il rischio di perdere di vista i valori che da sempre ispirano il patrimonio genetico del (diritto del) lavoro e che, si spera, continuino a denotarne anche i futuri svolgimenti: l’importanzadel lavoro per la realizzazione della persona che lo presta e per il progresso della società, ben oltre il dato quantitativo del tempo ad esso dedicato e della retribuzione che ne può derivare.

The essay addresses the issue of decent work, analysing it through the lens of working time. A universal and even foundational topic for labour law, it proves capable of responding both to the more traditional needs of protecting workers' health and to the more modern ones, which today can be traced back to the articulated and complex principle of decent work (work-life balance, gender equality, employment inclusion of the disabled, and so on). In this context, the paper seeks to direct the reader's attention also beyond the present circumstances, to ask whether, in the combination of the different perspectives involved, there is not the risk of losing sight of the values that have always inspired the genetic heritage of (labour) law and which, it is hoped, will continue to denote its future developments: the importance of work for the fulfilment of the person who performs it and for the progress of society, well beyond the quantitative data of the time dedicated to it and the remuneration that may derive from it
