    La participación de la familia en el manejo del dolor del paciente terminal por cáncer está sustentada por su influencia en la reacción que tenga el paciente ante la enfermedad y por el sufrimiento que genera asumir el padecimiento y la pérdida de un ser querido. Enfrentar el proceso de muerte de uno de sus miembros va a exigir a la familia realizar cambios importantes en su vida; su cotidianidad; los planes futuros que; sumado a sentimientos de angustia; temor; desesperanza; impotencia...; desencadenan una crisis que debe ser atendida inmediatamente para evitar que las necesidades; dificultades y confusiones invadan la familia.

    La intervención en la fase paliativa significa la aproximación a una familia en crisis que incluya un cambio de paradigma; una nueva construcción del saber y de los métodos de acción; para ser realizados en forma rápida; flexible y variada; a la misma velocidad que la enfermedad lo exige.

    The participation of the family in the management of the pain of the terminal patient is supported by the reaction that the patient has to his or her disease and by the suffering that the loss of a loved one generates. Facing the process of death of one of its members demands important changes in the family's life and their future plans; which added to feelings of anxiety , fear, desperation,and impotence, unleashing a crisis that must be immediately responded to, in order to avoid the invasion of difficulties and confusion in the family.

    The intervention in the palliative phase is an aproximation to the family in crisis that includes a change of paradigm, a new construction of knowledge and of the methods of action, so they can be realized in a rapid, flexible and varied way, at the same pace that the disease process demands.
