Resumen de Jesualdo Sosa, de su experiencia en Colonia de Riachuelo (Uruguay, 1928-1935) a su paso como asesor técnico en la Secretaría de Educación Pública (México, 1939-1943)

En este artículo, desde una perspectiva biográfica, reconstruiremos dos etapas de trayectoria del maestro y escritor Jesualdo Sosa. La primera transcurrió en Uruguay y la segunda, menos conocida, tuvo lugar en México. Comenzaremos reconstruyendo sus primeros pasos en el magisterio (1924) hasta la publicación de su libro Vida de un maestro (1935); nos concentraremos en las repercusiones que causó en la vida de Jesualdo la publicación de aquel diario de escuela novelado. La segunda etapa, desconocida por la historiografía mexicana y uruguaya, comenzó a fines del año 1939 cuando el maestro fue contratado por Gonzalo Vázquez Vela, secretario de Educación Pública de México, para trabajar como técnico asesor del organismo. Jesualdo, destituido y proscripto en su país, aceptó dicha convocatoria y estuvo viviendo en México desde finales de 1939 hasta inicios de 1943. ¿Cómo llegó la invitación del gobierno mexicano a Jesualdo? ¿Qué tareas desempeño allí? ¿Con quienes se relacionó? ¿Qué aportes realizó Jesualdo al proceso educacional mexicano? ¿Por qué decidió regresar a Uruguay en 1943? En este trabajo procuraremos responder estas preguntas analizando, principalmente, documentos personales de Jesualdo (correspondencia, manuscritos, libros inéditos, informes, invitaciones, etc.) que se encuentran en su archivo personal, en la Sección Archivos Literarios de la Biblioteca Nacional de Uruguay.

In this article, from a biographical perspective, we will reconstruct two stages in the career of the teacher and writer Jesualdo Sosa. The first took place in Uruguay and the second, less known, took place in Mexico. We will begin by reconstructing his first steps in teaching (1924) until the publication of his book “Vida de un maestro” (A Teacher’s Life, 1935); we will concentrate on the repercussions that the publication of that novelized school diary caused in Jesualdo’s life. The second stage, unknown by Mexican and Uruguayan historiography, begins at the end of 1939 when the teacher is hired by Vázquez Vela, Mexico’s Secretary of Public Education, to work as a technical advisor to the agency. Jesualdo, dismissed and banned in his country, accepted the invitation and lived in Mexico from the end of 1939 to the beginning of 1943. How did Jesualdo come to be invited by the Mexican government; what tasks did he perform there; with whom did he interact; what contributions did Jesualdo make to the Mexican educational process; why did he decide to return to Uruguay in 1943? In this paper we will try to answer these questions by analyzing, mainly, Jesualdo’s personal documents (correspondences, manuscripts, unpublished books, reports, invitations, etc.) found in his personal archive, in the Literary Archives Section of the National Library of Uruguay.
