The objective of this study was based on the analysis of meteorological drought in a tropical savannah region of Venezuela, by comparing four different drought indices. The information used for the study was obtained from the record of meteorological data, from monthly precipitation series of the agrometeorological station C¸ iudad Bolivia”, located within the experimental field of the INIA in the state of Barinas; for the period 1971-2016. Standardized precipitation indices (ISP), statistical index Z (IEZ), Chinese Z index (IZC) and normal precipitation percentage (PPN), based on monthly precipitation data, were used, which allowed to identify and describe drought events in the locality under study. The results obtained with the IEZ, IZC and PPN indices reflected heterogeneous values in the percentages of occurrence of droughts, especially in the recognition of severe and extreme droughts; compared to the ISP. Based on the above, the ISP demonstrated greater sensitivity to precipitation changes, proving to be the best option for the detection of drought events because it is more consistent and reliable.
