Katrin B. Anacker, Hazel A. Morrow-Jones, Edward J. Malecki

  • This paper discusses selected challenges of city planning and city development in the United States of America, differentiating between the inter-metropolitan scale and the intra-metropolitan scale. At the inter-metropolitan scale the discussion focuses on changes in technology and their impact on the roles of cities in the urban system. At the intra-metropolitan scale the authors discuss the polynuclear nature of cities, the redevelopment of downtowns, and challenges facing both mature communities and new communities in metropolitan areas. The focus of the article is on the basis of planning in the US and some of the factors underlying the many changes and the out-comes in American metropolitan areas with a special emphasis on technology and housing. Concluding remarks emphasize social causes and consequences of the patterns and trends, followed by recommendations for planning.
