  Se denomina periodonto al conjunto de tejidos que dan soporte al diente. Está formado por encía, hueso alveolar, ligamento periodontal y cemento radicular. La función del periodonto es dar fijación y unión de los dientes a los maxilares y garantizar el mantenimiento de la integridad de la superficie de la mucosa oral.

  La enfermedad periodontal es una patología de naturaleza infecciosa e inflamatoria que afecta al periodonto, es causada por bacterias y se caracteriza por pérdida de inserción periodontal, existencia de bolsas periodontales y pérdida de hueso de soporte.

  La enfermedad periodontal sigue distintas fases que pueden ser englobadas en dos grupos: gingivitis y periodontitis. La gingivitis es el proceso inflamatorio que afecta únicamente a la encía superficial, sin afectación de los tejidos de soporte. La evolución de una gingivitis establecida sin tratamiento da como resultado la aparición de periodontitis, en la cual existe afectación de los tejidos de soporte.

  The set of tissues that support the tooth is called the periodontium. It is formed by gum, alveolar bone, periodontal ligament and root cementum. The function of the periodontium is to provide fixation and union of the teeth to the jaws and ensure the maintenance of the integrity of the oral mucosa surface.

  Periodontal disease is a pathology of an infectious and inflammatory nature that affects the periodontium. It is caused by bacteria and is characterized by loss of periodontal attachment, existence of periodontal pockets and loss of supporting bone.

  Periodontal disease follows different phases that can be grouped into two groups: gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the inflammatory process that affects only the superficial gums without affecting the supporting tissues. The evolution of established gingivitis without treatment results in the appearance of periodontitis in which there is involvement of the supporting tissues.
