  • The similarities between the symbolic Orient of the Freemasons, the literary Orient, and Orientalism can be seen in plays, stories and essays. Sometimes it was reduced to a literary convention, a simple decorative backdrop or a cover for moral and social satire ; It could also be the object of a new historical, ethnological and linguistic scientific study. Whatever the case, the Orient appealed to the imagination of the Freemasons, always eager for symbols, and satisfied their curiosity about the world. In addition, it could be easily reconciled with their claim to universality, with the Enlightenment and with British colonial expansion.
