Largely forgotten, the Portuguese Commercial Code of 1888 still encompasses the discipline of maritime liens. Shaped under the influence of the old Italian and Spanish commercial codes, the regime pertaining to the classification and ranking of maritime liens on the ship was altered in 2009, towards an apparent consideration of ship mortgages as maritime liens. The content and implications of such legislative amendment are briefly analyzed.
