  • This paper deals with Mirabeau's political action during the last two years of his life. Particular reference is made to his wish to introduce into the National Assembly rules of procedure similar to those in force in the English Parliament. His ideas on parliamentary reform resemble in some ways those of Jeremy Bentham, author of the ‘Essay on Political Tactics’.

    Mirabeau published important papers in his journal, Le Courrier de Provence, in which he clearly expressed his views regarding the best way of proceeding in a parliamentary assembly. He himself presided over the Assembly with energy and courage, shortly before his death on 2 April 1791.
