Le attività di Raniero Mengarelli e di Ugo Ferraguti a Ponte Rotto e alla Cuccumella di Vulci (1928-1930)

    Nella lunga storia degli scavi di Vulci le ricerche effettuate tra il 1928 e il 1930 da Ugo Ferraguti e Raniero Mengarelli nella necropoli orientale di Ponte Rotto costituiscono uno dei capitoli più significativi. Oltre al recupero di celebri monumenti noti da tempo e alla scoperta di nuovi sepolcri, accuratamente documentati dai due scavatori, ritornarono allora in luce sculture ed elementi architettonici ancor oggi considerati fra le più significative testimonianze della cultura artistica di Vulci di età tardo-classica ed ellenistica. Impegnativo anche l’intervento che tra il 1928 e il 1929 interessò il Tumulo della Cuccumella, del quale si conservano accurati rilievi del Mengarelli e una ricca documentazione fotografica eseguita dal Ferraguti.

    The researches carried out between 1928 and 1930 by Ugo Ferraguti and Raniero Mengarelli in the eastern necropolis of Ponte Rotto are one of the most significant chapters in the long history of the Vulci excavations. Besides the recovery of long-time known famous monuments and the discovery of new tombs carefully documented by the two excavators, sculptures and architectural elements were brought back to light, still considered today among the most significant testimonies of the artistic culture of Vulci in the late-classical and Hellenistic age. The intervention that involved the Tumulo della Cuccumella between 1928 and 1929 was also demanding. The accurate reliefs by Mengarelli and a rich photographic documentation carried out by Ferraguti testify to this research.
