    This paper presents an epistolary corpus of 168 letters, originally written in Catalan, but also in English, French and Spanish, belonging to members of two families of the Catalan petty bourgeoisie –the Trueta and the Barba– who had to leave in exile as a result of the War of Spain (1936-1939). Scattered in two different archives, these letters –of diverse typology and subject matter– show how they both struggled to rebuild their lives, adapting to the demands of the new scenarios –mainly Baltimore, Perpignan, Oxford, Chartres, Santo Domingo (Ciudad Trujillo) and Mexico City. Among other things, they all shared what they called “the spirit of Balmes 46”.

    Aquest treball presenta un corpus epistolar de 168 cartes, redactades originalment en català, però també en anglés, castellà i francès, pertanyents als membres de dues famílies de la petita burgesia catalana –els Trueta i els Barba– que van haver de marxar a l’exili arran de la Guerra d’Espanya (1936-1939). Esparses en dos arxius diferents, aquestes cartes –de tipologia i temàtica diverses– mostren com els uns i els altres maldaven per refer les seues vides adaptant-se a les exigències dels nous escenaris: principalment, Baltimore, Perpinyà, Oxford, Chartres, Santo Domingo (Ciudad Trujillo) i Mèxic DF. Entre altres coses, tots ells compartien el que anomenaven “l’esperit de Balmes 46”
