    Objetivo: Se describe el proceso de incorporación e integración de la medicina complementaria y alternativa en el mundo científico y en la salud pública, desarrollado entre 1980 y 1999. Un próximo trabajo describe el progreso del 2000 al 2004. Desarrollo: Es a través del uso masivo que se hace de ella en EEUU y Europa que llega a ser sujeto de investigación científica. Su incorporación es un esfuerzo de conceptualización filosófica e investigación en el campo científico internacional que se acerca mucho a la resolución de conflictos de integración relacionados con el proceso de globalización. Primeramente se discutió apasionada y subjetivamente posiciones ideológicas, conceptos, cosmovisiones, estructuras de vida, en términos a ratos muy alejados de la posible objetividad científica y su método de análisis. Los consensos se encontraron volviendo al método y a la investigación científica. Entre 1980 y 1999 se creó un cuerpo de conocimiento sobre el uso y características de MAC. Se documentó que alrededor del 45 % de habitantes de países desarrollados la usan, se enseña en 80% de sus universidades. Se crearon organismos estatales para organizar y financiar su estudio e investigación. Hay consenso entre médicos que debe ser conocida por ellos para guiar y/o advertir a pacientes sobre su uso.

    Purpose: The process of incorporation and integration of complementary and alternative medicine (MAC) in the worlds of science and public health, between 1980 and 1999, is described. Development: It is through the massive utilization of MAC in the USA and in Europe that it became a subject for scientific research. Its incorporation has meant an effort of philosophic conceptualization and of inter- national scientific research that resembles the resolution of integration issues related to the globalization process. At first there was a passionate and subjective discussion of ideologies, concepts, world visions, life structures, in terms that were often distant from scientific objectivity and its methods. Consensuses were achieved through a return to scientific methods and research.Between 1980 and 1999, a body of knowledge on the use and characteristics of MAC was developed. It was ascertained that about 45% of people in developed countries have recourse to it and that it is taught in 80% of their universities. Governments have established organizations dedicated to set up and to finance their study. There is also a consensus among doctors on the fact that they should be acquainted with MAC in order to guide and inform patients on its utilization.
