Resumen de El establecimiento y funcionamiento del espacio marítimo en las costas atlánticas de la Capitanía General de Guatemala durante la Modernidad: un acercamiento metodológico

El tema de estudio sobre el establecimiento y funcionamiento del espacio marítimo en las costas atlánticas de la Capitanía General de Guatemala, ha sido poco abordado. Una de las principales razones, se debe a que la producción historiográfica existente hace referencia a temáticas vinculadas al sistema político, social y religioso, siendo el económico el menos investigado. A pesar de esta limitación, a principios de la década de 1990 algunos autores guatemaltecos consideraron que la economía marítima representó un aspecto fundamental para el desarrollo del Reino de Guatemala; sin embargo, pocos años después se observa un abandono en las pesquisas, de dicha línea temática, hasta que recientemente fueron retomados por expertos extranjeros. Con este contexto, en este breve artículo se presenta una síntesis crítica sobre los trabajos previos en torno al tema de interés, planteado desde diferentes disciplinas, señalando zonas e interrogantes que aún han quedado sin respuesta, con la finalidad de proponer el desarrollo de nuevas indagaciones, y con ello demostrar la posibilidad de adoptar nuevas perspectivas investigativas.

The study of the establishment and operation of the maritime space on the Atlantic coasts of the Capitanía General de Guatemala has been little addressed. One of the main reasons is because the existing historiography production refers to themes related to the political, social, and religious system, the economic system being the least investigated. Despite this limitation, at the beginning of the 1990s, some Guatemalan authors considered that the maritime economy represented a fundamental aspect for the development of the Reino de Guatemala. However, a few years later an abandonment in the investigations of this thematic line is observed, until recently they were taken up by studies by foreign experts. In this context, this short article presents a critical synthesis of previous work on the topic of interest, raised from different disciplines, pointing out areas and questions that have not yet been answered to propose the development of new inquiries and thereby demonstrate the possibility of adopting new investigative perspectives.
