Resumen de Marginación e infancia en una ciudad-arsenal del siglo 18: la Real Villa de Ferrol

Tomando como base de estudio la localidad de Ferrol, una ciudad-arsenal nacida a mediados del siglo 18 en el reino de Galicia, nuestro objetivo es analizar la realidad de la infancia marginada en aquel ámbito y las medidas diseñadas las autoridades para hacer frente a los problemas generados por ella. Estudiamos, en primer lugar, el fenómeno de la infancia abandonada y el papel desempeñado por el Hospital de Caridad para ofrecer una solución a una práctica generalizada en una población en expansión como aquella. Asimismo, analizamos la relación entre infancia y delincuencia, a través de las medidas represivas adoptadas por las autoridades civiles y militares para reorientar a la juventud ociosa en futuros hombres de provecho, mediante el trabajo en las instalaciones militares.

Taking as a basis of study the town of Ferrol, an arsenal-city born in the mid-eighteenth century in the kingdom of Galicia, our objective is to analyze the reality of marginalized children in that area and the policies designed by the authorities to deal with the problems generated by it. We study, first of all, the phenomenon of abandoned childhood and the role played by the “Hospital de Caridad” in offering a solution to a widespread practice in such an expanding population. We also analyze the relationship between childhood and delinquency, through the repressive measures adopted by the civil and military authorities to reorient idle youth into future useful men, through work in military installations.
