Resumen de La recepción inicial del darwinismo por el Panamá Decimonónico: Una respuesta paradójica

  El estudio del origen y evolución de la Historia Natural panameña ha recibido poca atención por parte de sus cultores y de los profesionales de la historia. Una de las asunciones que ha retardado tal estudio es la noción metafísica de que el ser panameño es refractario a las actividades intelectuales y científicas. La otra es que transportamos un temor ancestral al bosque heredado de la cultura castellana. El presente estudio tiene como propósito auscultar estas asunciones a la luz de la información que recibían nuestros conciudadanos decimonónicos, en gran medida, autores de la construcción de la nación panameña. Dicha información, asumíamos, debía referirnos directamente a Carlos Roberto Darwin el naturalista más preponderante del siglo XIX, el resultado inicial es que el personaje más reconocido en nuestra prensa, durante la segunda mitad de dicho siglo, es el naturalista suizonorteamericano Louis Agassiz, obstinado opositor del pensamiento darwinista. Como resultado de nuestro estudio concluimos que la prensa panameña transmitió la información sobre el nacimiento del darwinismo en el territorio nacional de forma mediatizada por los ojos norteamericanos

  The Panamanian naturalist, and historian, alike have neglected the study of the origin and evolution of the Panamanian Natural History. An assumption that has retarded such studies is the metaphysical notion that the Panamanian spirit is refractory to intellectual and scientific activities. The other one is the idea that we transport a primeval fearsome to the Woods, inherited from our Castilian past. The present study has the purpose to evaluate this assumptions in the light of the information received by our fellows citizens of nineteen century, a great deal, builders of the Panamanian nation. We assume that Charles Robert Darwin, the most remarkable figure of the British naturalism of XIX century, must be primary mentioned by our popular information media, though that role was fulfilled by the Suisse-American naturalist Louis Agassiz, the principal Darwin’s opponent in United States. We conclude from our study that the Panamanian press informed about the birth of Darwinism through the North American eyes.
