  • Resumen
    • The plutei of the church of Sant'Aspreno al Porto constitute a highly controversial case of early medieval Neapolitan sculpture. Twentieth-century historiography has particulary focused on stylistic and chronological analysis, often overlooking their conservation history and their reinstallation at the end of the nineteenth century. The present church of Sant'Aspreno al Porto is located beneath the Palazzo della Borsa, the headquarters of the Neapolitan Chamber of Commerce, in the Piazza Libero Bovio. It underwent a complete reconfiguration between 1890 and 1900. The "Risanamento", wide-raning urban planning movement aimed at the reclamation and redevelopment of the lower districts of Naples (Law for the Risanamento of Naples 1885), had already affected the area.

This contribution, based on materials collected from numerous Neapolitan and non-Neapolitan archives, presents the results of research conducted on the interior arrangement of the church of Sant'Aspreno al Porto before and after the transformations of the 1890s-1900s. This documentation, much of which is previously unpublished, will valuably offer a more comprhensive overview of a church of late antique origins that has rarely been subjected to critical studies that analyze it in holistic manner, from its origins to its modern phases. The conversation history of the plutei, the reconfiguration of the church, and the transformations that occurred therein also allow for a broader historiographical reflection on the fate and events of medieval furnishings in Naples between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It also prompts a consideration of the sensitivity of local institutions ant the protection of medieval ecclesiastical heritage, which, at the end of the nineteenth century, experienced interventions imposed by the urban renewal of the old town, resulting at times in significant losses and alterations to the local historical monuments.
