En el presente ensayo se analiza la génesis, las razones del nacimiento del ensayo y el concepto Caliban de Roberto Fernández Retamar en 1971. Se aluden varias razones, entre ellas la vocación martiana del autor, el hecho de la Revolución cubana en 1959, el reclamo del Che en torno al papel del intelectual y su compromiso con los cambios, así como diversos sucesos en el ámbito intelectual y político cubanos a inicios de los años setenta que hicieran que el autor perfilara tal noción. Caliban, una reapropiación del personaje de Shakespeare en La Tempestad, y una “reinterpretación de nuestro mundo, a la luz exigente de la revolución” se hace clave de interpretación, figura y símbolo, una abstracción del pensamiento, un concepto central del pensamiento insular con una extensión y contenido precisos.

In the present essay the genesis, the reasons for the birth of the essay and the Caliban concept of Roberto Fernández Retamar in 1971 are analyzed. Several reasons are alluded, among them the author's Martí vocation, the fact of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the claim of Che regarding the role of the intellectual and his commitment to change, as well as various events in the Cuban intellectual and political sphere at the beginning of the seventies that made the author outline such a notion. Caliban, a reappropriation of Shakespeare's character in The Tempest, and a "reinterpretation of our world, in the demanding light of the revolution" becomes a key of interpretation, figure and symbol, an abstraction of thought, a central concept of insular thought with a precise length and content.
