Resumen de Capítulo 8. La acuicultura en el centro costero del Mar Menor: Perspectiva histórica

  El Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) inició sus trabajos en piscicultura marina a mediados de los años 60 del pasado siglo en el laboratorio de San Pedro del Pinatar en el Mar Menor cuando la acuicultura era todavía una actividad incipiente. Se presentan en este artículo las primeras experiencias llevadas a cabo en el Centro Costero del Mar Menor y su contribución al desarrollo de una actividad que, en las décadas siguientes, se ha convertido en una industria moderna, multidisciplinar, tecnológicamente avanzada y con un alto grado de diversificación, que responde, junto a la pesca, al reto de la creciente demanda para alimentación humana, de productos sanos, seguros y de alta calidad.

  The Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) began to work in the sphere of marine fish farming in the mid-1960s in its research laboratory at San Pedro del Pinatar, on the Mar Menor lagoon, when aquaculture was still in its infancy. This chapter describes the first experiments carried out at the research centre and their contribution to the development of an activity which over the intervening decades has become a modern, multidisciplinary, technologically advanced and highly diversified industry that, together with fisheries in the wild, has risen to meet the challenge of the growing demand for healthy, safe and high quality products for human consumption.
