Morphological analysis and its impact on written language development in children with and without language disorders

  • Literacy progress of children with an atypical language acquisition has been studied from different approaches, and the phonological awareness is the protagonist. This has left morphology aside, a well-known affected area in children with a developmental language disorder and a way to study children’s understanding of the writing system. This chapter reviews linguistic aspects that cognitive and constructivist perspectives have taken into account when studying the development of written language and explores the possibilities to prompt morphological analysis through reading and writing activities. The activities tested and presented in this chapter were handled with three Mexican children who attend language therapy for different reasons, and they were planned considering constructivist studies. The observations derived from this work point out that morphological analysis is possible through specific reading and writing interventions and open a discussion on how this might benefit both: oral and written language.
