    • Staphylococcus aureus detection using an improved biosensor based on an etched interferometer built with a few-mode fiber is proposed. Interferometer sensors are well known for their good interaction with the surrounding field and have the capability to make accurate measurements of physical or chemical quantities such as refractive index. The sensor corresponds to Michelson Interferometers and was built by splicing a piece of FMF to the end of a single-mode fiber. The etching process was developed usinghydrofluoric acid in order to reduce the cladding diameter and hence improve the interaction with the external refractive index. Furthermore, the sensor was successfully tested as a proof-of-concept biosensor. The functionalization process of the interferometer biosensor was based on selecting the binding aptamer for the specific pathogen.
