Scarsamente frequentato dalla critica, il tema del non-finito rappresenta invece una costante della riflessione e del fare artistico di Svevo, fondata sul pensiero di Schopenhauer e sul magistero di autori come Jean Paul, Sterne, Diderot. La tematica del non-finito si lega, forse anche attraverso una suggestione tolstojana, alla teoria dell’uomo abbozzo che trova in Zeno la sua espressione artistica

Little explored by scholars, the theme of the unfinished is a constant in Svevo’s thinking and literary output, founded on the philosophy of Schopenhauer and on the teaching of authors such as Jean Paul, Sterne and Diderot. The theme of the unfinished is connected, possibly by way of Tolstoy, to that theory of man as a sketch which reaches artistic maturity with Zeno.
