La esclerosis múltiple (EM) es una enfermedad crónica del sistema nervioso central que afecta el cerebro y la médula espinal, causando inflamación, daño en la mielina y cicatrices en el sistema nervioso. Esto interfiere con la transmisión de impulsos nerviosos, generando síntomas como fatiga, debilidad muscular, problemas de coordinación y dificultades cognitivas. Aunque no tiene cura, el tratamiento busca aliviar los síntomas y ralentizar la progresión de la enfermedad. Aunque es más común en personas jóvenes, alrededor del 10% de los afectados tienen más de 65 años. Es importante para los ancianos con EM diferenciar los síntomas de la enfermedad del envejecimiento normal y consultar con especialistas.
