The present essay, which has come to the editor from an anonymous author, may perhaps be considered as an introduction to the physics articles that follow and to some others that are in this almanac. It can also be used in isolation, or it can be omitted, or one can do with it whatever one wishes; provided it is not interpreted against the author or the editor, for in that case one would certainly do something very unjust.
