    O presente artigo aborda as representações sociais da pobreza urbana no Brasil. O objeto de estudo é, por um lado, o conjunto de discursos e imagens sobre a favela na imprensa e, por outro lado, as auto-representações visuais de favelas e periferias da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, na virada do século XXI. O objetivo é analisar o uso da categoria favela na formação do imaginário social da cidade e, ao mesmo tempo, investigar como se constrói o olhar periférico nas representações fotográficas dos moradores de favelas. O método empregado baseia-se nas contribuições de Pierre Bourdieu e de Roland Barthes para a análise do discurso e nas contribuições da antropologia visual e da história cultural para a análise da fotografia enquanto campo documental na etnografia. Os resultados revelam um movimento de constituição de novas subjetividades no cenário das grandes cidades dos anos 90, por meio da ação de ONG’s nas favelas, criando um espaço de reflexão sobre si e sobre o outro e de afirmação de novas identidades.

    This article approaches the social representations concerning the urban poverty in Brazil. The point of this research is to identify the discourses and images about the slums within the press from one side; and on the other, the slums and suburban areas visual self representations of Rio de Janeiro capital city at the turn of the XXI century. The goal of this study is to analyze the use of the category slum in the conception of the social imaginary of the city and, at the same time, examine how the peripheral vision is built in the photographic representation of slum inhabitants. The applied method is based on the contributions of Pierre Bourdieu and Roland Barthes regarding the discourse analysis and also through the visual anthropology and cultural history to the photographic analysis as a documental field in ethnography. The results reveal the creation of a movement of new subjectivities in the scenario of big cities in the 90s through NGOs in the slums crea-ting a scope of reflection about themselves and others and the assertion of new identities.
