Se tiene conocimiento que existe gran variedad de poblaciones extensas y diversas de bacterias, virus y hongos ocupando cada superficie del cuerpo. Se estima que hay casi 30 trillones de células bacterianas viviendo dentro de cada ser humano, y existe una diversidad genética 100 veces más alta de las bacterias, lo que codifica capacidades metabólicas que influyen en su ecosistema microbiano y en el sistema inmunológico especifico del tejido del huésped. Estos microbios son conocidos de manera colectiva como la microbiota humana, mientras que el conjunto de microoganismos, genes y metabolitos que habitan un determinado lugar son conocidos como el microbioma.

It is known that there is a great variety of extensive and diverse populations of bacteria, viruses and fungi occupying every surface of the body. It is estimated that there are almost 30 trillion bacterial cells living inside each human being, and there is a 100 times higher genetic diversity of bacteria, which encodes metabolic capabilities that influence their microbial ecosystem and the tissue-specific immune system of the organism.
