Levantado do chão é um romance sobre o trabalhador rural, e é em sua reflexão acerca destes homens e mulheres, bem como a forma como os desenvolve, que se insere meu interesse. Muito tem a dizer essa história simples, sem clímax nem desfecho bem marcado, sem heróis nem grandes acontecimentos, esse romance que se constrói também como um latifúndio: o latifúndio de uma vida miserável, mas nem por isso desprovida de beleza. Filhos do latifúndio, os personagens desenvolvem-se mantendo-se na posição de ninguém, sem que o narrador se preocupe em velar seu apagamento – pois é justamente este apagamento, que tanta coisa revela. No caso de Saramago, principalmente a lidar com questões como o discurso oficial, nacional e religioso, a ironia se prova uma ferramenta amplamente utilizada pelo narrador para romper com esses paradigmas, com as bases desses discursos.

Raised from the ground is a novel on the rural worker, and it is within its reflection regarding these men and women, as well as their development, that my interest resides. This simple story has much to stay, although with no marked climax and denouement, with no heroes and great events: a novel that is also constructed as a piece of land: the land of a miserable life, but nonetheless not deprived of beauty. Sons and daughters of the land, characters develop kept in the position of nobody, without making the narrator worried about veiling their erasure –because it is precisely such erasure that so much has to reveal. In Saramago’s case, mainly as it deals with issues such as official, national, and religious discourses, irony proves to be a broad mechanism applied by the narrator in order to break free from these paradigms, from the bases of these discourses. My analysis, therefore, identifies how exactly this ironic voice operates within this novel’s discourse.With that in mind, I bring excerpts from Saramago’s book –whose interpretation, from a chiefly Marxist perspective, evince how the narrative successfully problematises official historical discourses that have already been institutionalised.
