  • Climate change constitutes an emerging challenge for Latin American and Caribbean cities due to the overwhelming evidence of the region’s high vulnerability and unequal distribution of impacts on the population, as well as the urgency of finding innovative ways that are disruptive to the current trends in global warming emissions. This chapter discusses the determinants for accelerating urban climate action in the region. The analysis focuses on i) the vertical integration of local planning instruments with national climate change policies, ii) evidence-based decision-making as a strategy to focus and accelerate implementation, and iii) strengthening skills and mobilizing finance for implementation. This approach will contribute to a better understanding of this challenge and cities’ readiness to move towards low-carbon and climate-resilient development.
