    A partir de la lectura de algunos pronunciamientos que fechan entre 1939 y 1941, el presente artículo se propone situar, recomponer y comentar la posición del rector de la Universidad de Chicago, Robert Maynard Hutchins, célebre por su defensa y promoción de una educación liberal, acerca del papel que deberían jugar los Estados Unidos ante la II Guerra Mundial, y de la misión correspondiente de la universidad para con la sociedad norteamericana y la humanidad en general.

    Based on the reading of some of the statements delivered between 1939 and 1941, this paper attempts to reconstruct and comment the position of the President of the University of Chicago, Robert Maynard Hutchins, a celebrated advocate of liberal education, about the role that the United States should play in World War II and about the service that university could provide with in behalf of American society and, in general, of humankind.
