To judge by the unusually large number of copies, the small 'Pietà' by Andrea del Sarto recorded by Giorgio Vasari in a room in the convent of SS. Annunziata, Florence, was one of the artist's most popular compositions. Long believed lost, the original panel, which dates from the mid-1510s, has recently come to light.
