Resumen de El Gobierno del Perú de Juan de Matienzo: una cuestión de servicio y merced en el siglo XVI

  En noviembre de 1567, el licenciado Juan de Matienzo remitía a Felipe II su obra Gobierno del Perú. El objetivo de esta contribución es explorar acerca de las motivaciones e intereses concretos que motivaron al oidor a escribir esta obra. A partir de una lectura detenida a su tratado capital y a su corpus epistolar (1561-1579), analizamos al autor y su escritura en el contexto de las relaciones clientelares, donde se vuelven fundamentales los conceptos de servicio y merced. Se sostiene que Matienzo escribió su obra central como un servicio al monarca, por el cual esperaba ciertas mercedes como recompensa, como era habitual en la práctica discursiva de oficiales regios que escribían al monarca y a su consejo.

  In November 1567, the jurist Juan de Matienzo sent his work Gobierno del Perú to Philip II. The goal of this contribution is to explore the concrete motives and interests the judge had to compose this writing. By taking a close look on his major treaty and his epistolary corpus (1561-1579), we analyze the author and his text within a context of clientele relationships, in which the concepts of servicio and merced become fundamental. We argue that Matienzo wrote his main work as a service to the king, for which he expected certain favors in return, as it used to be normal in the discursive writing of royal officials that wrote to the king and his royal council.
