Metamorphosis is an essential notion in the work and life of Max Jacob (1876-1944). The author was affected by a permanent existential questioning which led him to adopt a multitude of masks providing multiple identities. On a personal level, he will admit, for example, to the poet Jean Rousselot: « In moral terms, I am a chameleon. » On a poetic and graphic level, his work testifies to the tensions and powerful fields of force of the figure of the double in the author torn between the hope of salvation and the regret of the Parisian antics which nevertheless shaped his legend. Max Jacob was haunted by a continual questioning of his identity and this existential experience was lived in the mode of permanent doubt and the annihilation of the Ego that only conversion will have appeased to a certain extent, tracing a steep path between the burlesque and the mystical.

La métamorphose est une notion essentielle à l’œuvre et à la vie de Max Jacob (1876-1944). L’auteur a été affecté par une interrogation existentielle permanente qui l’a conduit à adopter une multitude de masques pourvoyeurs d’identités multiples. Sur le plan personnel, il avouera par exemple au poète Jean Rousselot : « Au moral, je suis caméléon. » Sur le plan poétique et graphique, son œuvre témoigne de tensions et de champs de forces puissants de la figure du double chez l’auteur déchiré entre l’espérance du salut et le regret des pitreries parisiennes qui ont cependant façonné sa légende. Max Jacob a été hanté par une interrogation continuelle sur son identité et cette expérience existentielle a été vécue sur le mode du doute permanent et de la néantisation du Moi que seule la conversion aura apaisé dans une certaine mesure traçant un chemin escarpé entre le burlesque et le mystique.
