    L'origen de les col·leccions de minerals de l'actual Museo Geominero (Museo del Instituto Geológico y Minero de España) es remunta a l'any 1849, quan la reina Isabel II, mitjançant Reial decret, va crear la Comisión para la Carta Geológica de Madrid y General del Reino, institució predecessora de l'actual Centro Nacional Instituto Geológico y Minero de España - CSIC (CN IGME-CSIC). Des de llavors, la història d'aquestes col·leccions es pot agrupar en diferents períodes de temps caracteritzats per l'existència d'una major o menor activitat: al principi, entre 1849 i 1927 es van dur a terme els treballs de recol·lecció i documentació per a l'elaboració del mapa geològic d'Espanya i s'iniciarien les col·leccions de minerals. Posteriorment, entre 1927 i 1957 va tenir lloc la consolidació del museu, ja en la ubicació que ocupa actualment. A continuació i fins a 1980, es va produir una paralització dels treballs que portaren a un estancament de les col·leccions. Finalment, des de 1980 es produeix un ressorgiment en la gestió de les col·leccions, que coincideix amb el desenvolupament de diversos projectes d'actualització i millora del museu. Aquest període s'estén fins ben entrat el segle XXI, però en aquesta primera part del treball es descriu fins a 1988, data en la qual es van fer les obres de restauració per a esmenar el deteriorament sofert pel museu durant més de seixanta anys.

    The origin of the mineral collections at the current Museo Geominero (Museum of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, IGME) dates back to the year 1849 when the Spanish Queen Isabel II, through a Royal Decree, established the Commission for the Geological Map of Madrid and the Kingdom, the predecessor institution of the current National Center of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain-CSIC (CN IGME-CSIC). Since then, the history of these collections can be grouped into different periods characterized by varying levels of activity: initially, between 1849 and 1927, the collection and documentation work was carried out for the preparation of the geological map of Spain, and the mineral collections were initiated. Subsequently, between 1927 and 1957, the museum was consolidated, already in its current location. Then, from 1980, there was a resurgence in the management of the collections, coinciding with the development of several projects for updating and improving the museum. This period extends well into the 21st century, but in this first part of the work, it is described up to 1988 when restoration work was carried out to address the damage suffered by the museum for more than sixty years.
